Originating in the rugged mountains of Timor-Leste (East Timor),
Dili Coffee is a fine example of 100% Organic Arabica coffee. We
import
the coffee from East Timor as green beans, and then
roast it fresh daily in Melbourne, Australia for your enjoyment.
Certified by the Organic
Crop Improvement Association as organically produced and
processed, Dili Coffee is a full-bodied, richly flavoured coffee
with a creamy, aromatic finish.
Dili Coffee is perfect for cafés, home, or the office.
You can order whole beans or ground, as you require.
By purchasing Dili Coffee you are supporting the world's
youngest nation as it begins its new era of independence. Coffee
production is East Timor's most important industry. Prior to the
Indonesian invasion of 1974, the former Portugese colony was producing
around 45,000 tons of Arabica coffee beans per annum. In the ensuing
years of internal unrest, the annual production shrunk to around
8,000 tons. To make things worse, an Indonesian monopoly on coffee
exports from East Timor meant that coffee farmers received an artificially
low, fixed price for their crop.
In 1994, the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID) and the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA)
initiated a project to help some of the poorest East Timorese farmers
improve their lot. In the following years, the coffee monopoly
was broken and washing stations were built all around the coffee
producing areas in East Timor, resulting in vastly improved coffee
quality.
Washed East Timor Arabica coffee is Certified Organic by the Organic
Crop Improvement Association. This certification was assured as
the coffee trees in East Timor have not been fertilized for more
than 25 years.
The coffee processing facilities have also been certified, enabling
East Timor coffee to be marketed as organically produced and processed,
a status that commands a higher price on the world market and brings
a greater return to the small-scale farmers.
By purchasing Dili Coffee you will directly contribute to the
livelihood of the 17,000+ East Timorese coffee farming families
who are involved in its production.
We hope you enjoy this fine example of Organic Arabica coffee.
